This set of medical illustrations demonstrates the mechanism by which a pulmonary embolism forms and can become lodged in the lungs. The first anatomy drawing shows the path of emboli from the deep veins of the right leg through the inferior vena cava to the heart and lungs. The second medical illustration depicts the final fatal emboli, including final massive emboli completely blocking the pulmonary arteries to both lungs. The third image shows the initial chronic shower of emboli, including multiple small emboli lodged deep in lung vessels, causing periodic episodes of pain. The fourth drawing shows the formation of emboli in the deep veins of the right leg where they break off and travel in the blood to the heart and lungs.
